What Does the Y Chormosome Mean?

    ryansallans:

For the past two years I have consulted with an organization in the development of online healthcare learning modules for medical staff working with the LGBTQI community. We have just reached the module on “Disorders of Sex Development” and I found an invaluable guide for helping to craft a module that is specific to our learning audience.

I know on tumblr there is much debate, rhetoric and musings regarding sex and so I thought the below section (page 33) from the guidelines might be interesting:

“A lot of unintended harm happens when people assume a Y chromosome makes a person a boy or man, and the lack of a Y chromosome makes a person a girl or woman. One physician educator had the challenging experience of trying to calm a 23-year old patient who had just been told by a resident that she was “really a man” because he had diagnosed her as having a Y chromosome and Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.

It is true that in typical male development, the SRY gene on the tip of the Y chromosome helps to send the embryo down the masculine pathway. But more than the SRY is needed for sex determination and differentiation; for example, women with CAIS have the SRY gene, but lack androgen receptors. In terms of hormone effects on their bodies (including their brains), women with CAIS have had much less “masculinization” than the average 46,XX woman, because their cells do not respond to androgens.

Moreover, the SRY gene can be translocated onto an X chromosome (so that a 46,XX person may develop along a typical masculine pathway), and many of the genes involved in sex differentiation lie on the autosomes, not on the chromosomes (including WT-1 on 11, SOX9 on 17, and SF-1 on 9). Genes involved in sex differentiation can code for atypical proteins and thus intermediate level of function. For these reasons, some professionals now prefer the term “molecular sex” to “chromosomal sex” or “genetic sex.” “Molecular sex” seems to better capture the complexity.

And beyond the genes, a person’s sex development can be significantly influenced by environmental factors (including the maternal uterine environment in which the fetus developed).

So it is simply incorrect to think that you can tell a person’s sex just by looking at whether he or she has a Y chromosome.”

[TW for trangst] Being trans makes you apologetic.

    cocksucking-accent:

(AKA “I should be doing homework but this really needs to be said and I didn’t stick it in my proposal because it felt like whining and I couldn’t find a proper place to put it but this has got to be out there somewhere.”)

    It does. It really does.

It starts the very first time you realize you aren’t “normal,” and you turn to your first person and tell then that maybe, you know, if it’d be ok… Maybe they wouldn’t mind calling you Sam instead of Samantha? Or Joan instead of Joe? Or could they just use your initials, maybe? If it’s not too much trouble? And this person (whoever they are) thinks it’s a game. And they laugh, or they snicker, or they ask you why you would do such a thing. Because Joan is a girl name, and you’re not a girl. Why would you want to be one? So you apologize and laugh it off, but inside you’re not smiling.

And it happens again a couple of years later, when you find your way to the internet and make yourself an account in a kiddy forum and say you’re a boy. Your little display picture is a male anime character or another. And you grow to really like this community, until one day someone finds you out for one way or another. Maybe you were careless and let a friend see the site over your shoulder, and they joined. Maybe you started IMing with someone from the forum and they saw your display photo on your IM system, and it’s of a girl. Maybe you decided to go to a meet-up and everyone realizes you were lying. Because of course you are not who you say you are. So you apologize and laugh it off, and say you were just roleplaying. Or it was a joint account with a friend, and they left. Or you clicked the wrong gender when signing up and didn’t realize until people thought you were that gender and you kept it going because it was funny. But of course you can’t go back to the site now.

Again when you start dressing more androgynous, and when someone genders you the way you feel inside, your friends laugh and assure these people that you are not what you look like. That you really do have a dick. Would this stranger want to see it? ‘Cause they’ll pull it out for you if they have to. Hahaha, isn’t it funny that this person thought you were a girl? And you laugh and you apologize to this other person for looking misleading, but inside you are kicking yourself.

And then you come out. Hesitantly at first. You come out to a couple of close friends, and you say you may be genderqueer, and you don’t really know where you stand, but would they mind calling you “they?” And could they just call you Alex, or Cory, or Logan, which are all gender-neutral? And they say that maybe, I mean, it’s really hard, they’ve always known you as Alice and it’s going to be so super-hard to keep those pronouns straight. Hahahaha get it? Straight? Because you’re not straight if you want to be called Alex. You’re obviously gay or bi or something because straight people don’t switch genders. And you say it’s ok and you know it will take time and you don’t correct them even when they misgender you through the years and they call you the wrong thing in front of new friends or in front of your partners. And you apologize for picking such difficult pronouns and for putting them through this and asking them to switch over.

You apologize when you throw the gender ratios off in class and if only you were a girl you could be divided by gender and both groups would have the same amount of people. But, I mean. You don’t mind being with the girls, right? You understand them! Here, ehm, Rob. We promise we still think of you as a guy. But it will be so much easier if you just do us this favor and let us put you in the girls’ group. And you apologize for putting them through this.

You apologize for holding up the line at a gay club because the bouncers are convinced that your ID is a fake. And when you get out at the end of the night and they’re still there, you ask them why they thought it was fake, since it’s brand-spanking-new and you just got it, with the right name and gender, this past month. And they ask you if you’re trans. Oh, you are? Well, that explains it. It just didn’t look right, you know. The font is too thin.

You apologize when you wear a dress and grow your hair out and wear make-up and they still call you Andrew because it’s so hard for them because you will always be “he” to them.

You apologize for going into the right bathroom.

You apologize for mentioning that not all men have deep voices.

You apologize for knowing about periods.

You apologize for having a period.

You apologize for not having a period.

    You apologize for being tall.

    You apologize for being short.

    You apologize for passing.

    You apologize for being read.

You apologize for fucking existing and taking up space that you have no right to because you’re a filthy trans person and should just let cis people go ahead and walk all over you.

You apologize for wanting the same rights everybody else has.

And then? Then you have to apologize for not speaking up, because it’s not like cis people could have guessed that you were having issues with housing, or with pronouns, or with the bathroom, or with surgery, or with anything at all. Because you should be both unnoticed and a banner child. Because you should let everybody know you are here in case you make them uncomfortable, or in case they do something that’s fucked up and that screws you over. Because it’s not like you were supposed to see that. If they had only known you were there, they wouldn’t have done it. But oh my gods stop talking you’re always talking about how hard you have it why aren’t you just thankful about the stuff we’ve given you.

    So you apologize for being.

Sex is no more an immutable binary than is gender. There are intersex people who are born with non-binary genitalia, as I have already mentioned. There are people with hormonal anomalies. In fact, hormone levels vary wildly within the categories of cis male and cis female. Chromosomes, too, vary. If you thought “XX” and “XY” were the only two possible combinations, you have some serious googling to do. In addition to variations like XXY, XXYY, or X, sometimes cis people find out that they are genetically the “opposite” of what they though they were– that is, a ‘typical’ cis man can be XX, a ‘normal’ cis woman can be XY.

The fact is that the concept of binary sex is based on the fallacious idea that multiple sex characteristics are immutable and must always go together, when in fact many of them can be changed, many erased, and many appear independently in different combinations. “Female” in sex binary terms means having breasts, having a vagina, having a womb, not having a lot of body hair, having a high-pitched voice, having lots of estrogen, having a period, having XX chromosomes. “Male” means having a penis, not having breasts, producing sperm, having body hair, having a deep voice, having lots of testosterone, having XY chromosomes. Yet it is possible to isolate, alter, and remove many of these traits. Many of these traits do not always appear together, and before puberty and after menopause, many of them do not apply.

Did this nasty badly designed banner get your attention? Are you an FtM/transmasculine/etc. person who’s low on cash? LOOK AT THIS POST.
OK SO I hang out on several sites (including Tumblr) where there’s a lot of FtM’s/transfolk. Especially in this poopy economy, we’re all short on cash right now. It BREAKS MY DARN HEART to see transfolk suffer mental breakdowns just because they can’t afford binders, packers, T, or whatever else they need to feel more at home in their bodies. I’ve been there, it’s awful, and I don’t want you to be there. So I’ve compiled links and a few other things to help you guys, PLEASE spread this around to anyone who you think would benefit from it, on or off of Tumblr. If you have things to add, let me know!  I’d love to compile a list for MtF’s as well, but unfortunately that will take some more research for me as I’m much less informed in MtF goodies.
(a few of these things I’ve posted before, I just compiled them with some new stuff.)
NOT EVERYTHING LISTED BELOW IS FREE, but I’ve searched for the cheapest gear/services possible, if you know any CHEAPER ones, please reply, reblog or send me an Ask!
_____________________________________________________________
Binders:
As most of you know, Big Brother Used Binders is a wonderful place to go if you cannot afford one. They are NOT 100% FREE, they do require a $5-$8 shipping fee on donated Underworks binders as well as up to a $12 fee on non Underworks donated binders. This is still EXCEPTOINALLY CHEAPER than $40, $50 or $100+ that you could be spending on the same ones.
http://www.thetransitionalmale.com/BBUB.html
Some Underworks products are also available on Amazon and other sites for slightly cheaper than what’s on the actual Underworks site, which is already very well priced.
http://www.amazon.com/Underworks-Ultra-Cotton-Spandex-Compression/dp/B001KWHT42/ref=sr_1_cc_3?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1330505053&sr=1-3-catcorr
Also, when looking for binders, don’t restrict yourself to FtM gear. Men with gyneocamastia also have a lot of compression shirts to choose from, and, yes, there’s always cosplay gear. Even a one-size-too-small sports bra may work for some. Sports bras are definitely the cheapest option, but they won’t work for everyone, if you head over to Walmart/Kmart/whatever superstore to check out the sports bras, keep an eye out in the Active wear section for things like “waist trimming belts”, which are often very similar to binders but worn on the waist.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gynecomastia-Compression-Tank-Top-GC2-Flattens-Breast-/110505632785
http://www.amazon.com/Yasco-Adjustable-Waist-Trimmer-Black/dp/B005VRLT6Q/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1
HOWEVER, KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE ARE NOT MEANT FOR YOUR CHEST! Do NOT tighten these as much as you would a binder made for your chest, they often have less give, as in they won’t stretch when you breathe. If your dysphoria is really killing you, these are a good -temporary- solution that’s safer than medical tape like Ace bandages, they’ll do the job until you can get something more specialized. The only time I’d really recommend these is if you are a SMALL chested individual, someone who doesn’t need a ton of compression. Larger chested people should NOT use these, as you will need more compression to achieve the flat chest look, we don’t want any bruised ribs or decreased lung capacity here. And I shouldn’t have to say this, but, please don’t wear your binders to bed. Having breasts when you don’t identify with them isn’t fun, but you have to give your body a break.
And no matter how poor you are, please please please don’t use duct tape, Ace bandages, or any other type of medical bandage.
I made my own first binder in Junior High out of a piece of light canvas that I found in the garage, I’ve always had a small chest but it worked pretty well. I made a quick tutorial on how to make your own (velcro type anyway. You can also use a zipper, snaps, or lace up instead!), I don’t much recommend light canvas, as it didn’t stretch much, try to find a durable fabric with a decent amount of stretch. I know it’s tempting to get really rigid, non-stretchy fabric because you think it’ll bind better. Don’t. Using a fabric with no stretch will bind, but it’ll also keep you from breathing deep, and if it’s tight enough, hurt your ribs! Also don’t use fabric that’s TOO stretchy, it’ll be comfy but it won’t bind.
How to make a cheap simple binder:
http://postimage.org/image/8d4hv3j65/
One last note about this little tutorial; position the connecting pieces wherever you like them most. Some binders close in the middle, some on the back, my favorite is on the side, under the armpit. It’s out of the way and easy to reach, plus it’s least visible there. Wherever you want it to connect is going to effect where you put the straps, so keep that in mind.
Packing:
Basic packer harnesses, in 3 different sizes for UNDER $4, with free worldwide shipping.

L http://www.priceangels.com/NEOFAN-Sexy-Sling-T-Back-Men-s-Brief-Underwear-Size-L-White-s100947.html
www.edenfantasies.com is actually primarily a sex toy website (NSFW AND NOT FOR THOSE UNDER 18.), HOWEVER, they carry various regular packers, play packers and harnesses. If you go there, you’ll realize that they have pretty average prices. So what’s the big deal? You can potentially get -anything you want for free-. How? The EdenRewards program gets you points EVERY TIME YOU DO SOMETHING ON THE WEBSITE. Every search, every comment, every poll vote, every rating gets you money to spend on the site! You rack up points (1 point = 1 penny), and when you have enough for what you want, simply convert it to a giftcard and get your stuff. PLUS once you recieve your items, you can do written reviews on them TO EARN MORE POINTS. There is a transgender forum to hang out and talk in, you get MONEY FOR SPENDING ON A NEW PACKER JUST BY TALKING TO PEOPLE… OR TOYS. depends on what you want haha. But how amazing is that? Dedicate 15min a day to posting in the forums, rate a few products, and within a few weeks you could have yourself a new packer/pack and play/harness (they don’t currently carry binders) plus they carry feeldoes… yeap.
Example of how much you could earn in 15min-1hr a day:
Log in = 2 points
Comment on 7 different products = 21 points (you can comment anything, like “looks cool” or “no thanks” or a detailed description of why you like the color scheme haha)
Comment on 7 different profiles =21 points (you can comment things like “great reviews” or “cool icon”, easy stuff!)
Comment on 9 different reviews = 27 points (most people just say “thanks for the review!”, but you can always leave a nicer comment than that haha)
Rate 7 of those reviews = 21 points
Submit 5 searches = 25 points (you can search words, or even just letters to see what you get, it doesn’t have to come up with anything to get points)
Vote in 7 polls = 7 points
Make 10 posts in the forums = 50 points (any forum, you can post anything from detailed discussions to simply “ok lol”)
That’s $1.74 a day just for being active on the site. There’s also several ONE TIME points you can get for opening the account (it’s free), posting in your profile for the first time, verifying your email (which can be private), and subscribing to the newsletter. EVEN BETTER; doing GOOD reviews and getting positive votes will make your ranking go up, and when you hit a 5/10, you can request FREE PRODUCTS TO TEST OUT AND REVIEW. You have to start out with cheap stuff first (they have to approve you first), but the more reviews you do, the more points you’ll get, and the more expensive items you can request.
Hey, with the Mr. Limpy only being $13+shipping, you could save up for one in a few days if you were very active!
http://www.edenfantasys.com/sex-toys-for-gender-play/cock-packers/mr-limpy-extra-small
Also, they have the cutest harnesses I’ve ever seen
http://www.edenfantasys.com/rodeoh-harness/adult-toys-dvds-30997
Check out the EdenClassifieds section, once in a while someone will have a harness or packer for sale for super cheap! Unfortunately you can’t use your edenpoints on those.
One last thing, with every order on EdenFantasies they give a free gift! I remember there being a tote bag, toy cleaning wipes (which would work great for daily packer cleaning!), EF shirts, a vibrating cock ring (aka a new accessory for your feeldoe?), and SOMETIMES they carry small free sex toys that are discontinued, overstocked, or on a special deal. Now only if they’d carry binders! :0 Make sure the EF staff knows that there’s a big demand for them, they’re good at listening to what their customers want.
SMALL EDIT ABOUT EDENFANTASIES: Live with your parents or people that you don’t want knowing about your order from EF (I mean, it IS a sex toy site.)?? IT’S OK, the packaging is very discreet, it doesn’t have “SEX TOYS” or a contents list pasted on the front. Also, shipping for orders under $59 is $5.95, always. Over $59, it’s FREE.
http://www.edenfantasys.com/support/shopping/shipping-policy/
So get your packer from Eden with your points, and a harness from PriceAngels, there you have a packer and harness for under $5 plus a free cock ring/shirt/bag/wipes, and your binder from BBUB for $12 or less. How much do you love me now? I’m the FtM King of Frugality.

www.edenfantasies.com is actually primarily a sex toy website (NSFW AND NOT FOR THOSE UNDER 18.), HOWEVER, they carry various regular packers, play packers and harnesses.

Also, they have the cutest harnesses I’ve ever seen

So get your packer from Eden with your points, and a harness from PriceAngels, there you have a packer and harness for under $5 plus a free cock ring/shirt/bag/wipes, and your binder from BBUB for $12 or less. How much do you love me now? I’m the FtM King of Frugality.

    Queer People Not My People

    qquagga:

[TW warning: anti-trans bigotry and violence]
The following is a piece I wrote for a zine, QUAC , about the topic of Queer Violence

    Queer People Not My People

I expected to lose a lot transitioning from a gay identified boy to a trans woman. I’ve lost family, once-called “best friends”, and the ability to find a man on A4A for some anonymous one night stands. What I didn’t expect was the loss of queer communities as a safe space for me. I once idolized queer spaces, now I always enter them in trepidation, even the ones I’ve helped build and maintain. I write this piece still reeling at how much anger I felt last night, still picking out the tear-dried clumps of mascara from my eyes. It’s the slow realization that I am often the only trans woman in the room, and that queer people love throw around my identity as part of their little acronym, but would rather not hear from me.
